How do you feel comfortable in social situations while counting calories?

When I go out with friends, while everyone is enjoying their food and drinks, I'm constantly stressed thinking, 'How many calories is this? Will I ruin my day if I eat this?' If I openly express my situation, there's a chance they might find it weird, but even if I continue like this, I limit myself too much. How do you maintain this balance, or is there anyone who doesn't worry about it at all?

I've experienced the same thing; honestly, I was feeling pretty overwhelmed. It had become a torment for me to constantly check the calorie count of the dishes on the menu at gatherings with friends. Finally, I went to a nutritionist, who suggested a few "joker" options for eating out. So nowadays, for example, I just order things like grilled chicken salad directly; I keep control, and no one understands what I'm doing.

I had found myself in this situation too, especially the part about ordering desserts in cafes was really stressing me out. One day, I explained it clearly and my friends responded much more comfortably. In fact, one of them said, 'I’ve been thinking about starting too.' So sometimes open communication can really help. Of course, things might not be that easy in every group, so you'll have to assess accordingly.

Honestly, it feels boring to care about it this much. I mean, isn't it a bit too strict of an attitude? The friends' environment is already enjoyable, and focusing on the calories of such a small thing feels like a lot of stress to me. There's no need to torture yourself; if you relaxed a bit, I think nobody would even notice.

If you're calculating things this detailed, I think it's essential to see a dietitian. Because those who get stressed and bored like this usually don't have a sustainable plan. Moreover, there's something called a 'calorie bank' in social settings; if you get help from an expert and arrange your meals accordingly, you can continue without restrictions when you're out. Plus, in the long run, you'll feel more at ease.

Let me update you: Today I did a small experiment, I tried to be honest before eating outside. I said, 'I've been paying attention to some things lately,' and it seemed like no one found it weird. But I still don’t feel completely at ease. I think I need a bit more time, or the thought of how it will be received in different groups is eating away at me.

This situation is actually very common. You're not the only one who worries about this. I had a hard time eating out while on a diet too, but I realized that no one pays that much attention to what I'm eating. So, a lot of it ends in your own perception. Everyone is actually focused on their own food; there's no need to make it such a big deal.
