How should I bring up my spouse's foot odor?

When we get home in the evening and my husband takes off his shoes, there's a noticeable smell that lingers in the room. I've noticed it several times, but I'm torn: would he feel embarrassed if I said something, or would he not understand what I mean if I hint at it? If you were in my position, would you say it directly, or would you first suggest changing shoes or socks?

In private, keep it short. Don't bring it up in front of others.

A vague hint can be misunderstood. A concrete but non-accusing sentence like "When you take your shoes off, the room keeps a smell. What could we try together?" is clearer. That way you address the situation you noticed, not his personality. Joking can also hurt unnecessarily.

@kirmizikazak, saying it in a private moment makes sense. But would just asking them to change their shoes hide the real issue? It seems better to say it directly and talk through a solution together.

I also think it’s best to clearly mention the smell first; otherwise, it might not be clear why you’re making the suggestion. Then you can try practical things like socks or shoes together.
