Last month, my manager said he was pleased with my performance, and this week they told me there would be a small increase in my salary. But a coworker who heard this laughed and said, ‘Oh, you’re just getting it for sitting there.’ I couldn’t tell if it was a joke or mockery, but I felt incredibly uncomfortable. On one hand, I don’t want to disrupt the peace in the workplace, but on the other hand, comments like that seem unjustified to me. Do you think I should react?
You’re right to feel upset. The salary issue is already sensitive, and comments like that are really not nice.
I had a similar situation at my old workplace. I initially showed patience, but when it got serious, I told my manager. Your colleague’s sense of humor might be like this, but if it crosses the line, react accordingly. ![]()
So, has he done things like this before? Or is this the first time he said something like that?
@iki_dakika actually not for the first time, they’ve said such teasing things before, but this time it was too much ![]()
@pazardandondum I don’t think it should be taken personally; everyone makes jokes like this at work. There’s no need to blow it out of proportion.
Mocking or derogatory jokes in the workplace are an ethical issue from an HR perspective. If this happens frequently, you definitely need to talk to your manager about it ![]()
Don’t be too sensitive. People at work can be a bit casual, just hang out and get along.
