The topic of side income with my coworker

I noticed that a friend of mine in the office is doing freelance work. It seems like he handles these tasks when he’s not too busy, because he mentioned that sometimes he does these kinds of things to relax. I’ve been looking for a side income opportunity for a long time, but I’m not sure if it would be appropriate to discuss this at work. Do you think I should talk to him and get some advice, or should everyone just manage their own stuff?

Confidential_saf: Isn’t that kind of thing already forbidden at work? I mean, if the boss sees it, wouldn’t they immediately give a punishment or something? You definitely shouldn’t talk about it, in my opinion. Because if you get involved in those matters, it could create problems.

Laf_alintilayan: One of my friends was freelancing too, and he said, ‘I do it without hesitation so my boss notices, because I want him to see my skills.’ Of course, his boss noticed and yelled at him like crazy. Ahaha.

Ters_kose: I think you need to consider the job description regarding this matter first. If they are slipping into freelance work while being busy, it’s unfair to both the employer and their teammates. I hope that’s not your intention

Expert_CommonSense: Side jobs at the workplace are specified in the employment contract. Some companies even restrict freelance work that you do outside of working hours. I recommend reviewing the employment contract and company procedures beforehand

Subject owner: Let me add that the work my friend does is very different from our industry. We are in software, while he does design-type work. So, something he doesn’t finish won’t create problems, but I might be open to confusion.

Empathetic_specific: Things like this can weigh heavily on your conscience, you know? When you come to the office in the morning, you say to yourself, ‘everything will be over today,’ but by the evening, there’s hardly enough mental space left for freelance work. Honestly, sometimes it really disrupts your inner peace.

Traditionalist: It’s often said in our neighborhood, ‘everyone is chasing extra income but without doing their job properly.’ I think before you get involved with such things, you should first gain trust in the job you have. After all, what your colleague did is not normal.

Student: My friend and I recently started a website project. He was working on it between classes, I was up in the early morning. It was quite challenging, but I think freelancing is kind of like therapy. Still, you can’t talk about work, be careful.

Male_bakisi: Men are generally motivated by money in these matters. Talking about side income at work seems a bit strategic. They might try to draw you into a collaboration and benefit from it. Trust should be questioned a bit, you know :smiling_face_with_tear:

When I look at it like İrem does, the detail that seems small here actually stands at the center of the issue. If I were in that position, I wouldn’t make a definitive decision without asking about that detail.
