@pazardandondum what you call the culture of the environment is actually normalization. I think the glances are everyone’s way of measuring 'status' in some way. It’s not completely about clothing.
You already understand, your dress is eye-catching, and your friend has warned you about it. Choosing a basic outfit is a safer bet without getting into trouble.
Judgments based on dressing are related to gender roles. The expectation for women to dress "appropriately" in every environment is a form of control. If you felt that they did something wrong to you, it must be true.
