Then there was a period of silence. They weren't indifferent or anything, but I didn't fully understand. In the meantime, I thought about going to HR, but it feels like it would be against my manager.
It's your right to demand the value of your work. If your director seems to be personalizing the situation, that's unfortunately their problem. Because of this, women have been struggling with long-standing inequalities as they remain silent for years. Of course, you will draw your boundaries. You mentioned uncomfortable glances; these could be reactions like "don't question my space." But you didn't do anything wrong by asking for a salary increase; that's clear.
These kinds of situations are quite common. The manager may have had salary issues with upper management before. I'm sure they're not targeting you, but of course, to avoid escalating the discussion, proceed carefully. Unfortunately, these are routine things in the business world.
