When I asked for a raise, they said 'we're family,' then they fired me

Friends, I can't make sense of what has been happening for a week. I conveyed my request for a salary increase, which had been on my mind for a while, to management last week. The next day, during a meeting, our boss said, 'we are a family here, everyone has value.' But today, HR called me in and handed me my exit. They cited budget issues as the reason. Do you think there’s something else behind this or is it just a coincidence?

that happened to me too. a month after I asked for a raise at my previous job, I was let go under the pretext of poor performance. meanwhile, I was also doing extra work during that time. I think they got angry that I asked for a raise. the whole "we're a family" thing is just a story.

Didn’t I say something detailed? I mean, is the family word a reason or a consequence? I couldn’t understand that.

@kilittesekilde the HR director directly told me "budget cuts," but I've heard that they are going to hire someone new in the team I work in. It doesn't really make sense.

@makarnaoncesi might actually be right about the performance issue; these things can't just be resolved with a demand for a raise.

The company is required to provide a reason for your dismissal, but if they don't explain it well, you have the right to appeal. Keep your termination document and any written communications. Check if the notice period has been applied correctly 🤔

Honestly, I got a bit stuck on the title; what's the family thing got to do with your request for a raise? I think this conversation feels like a distraction from the start 🤭

Are you saying it's a coincidence that they fired us just because we said we're family? I mean, it's interesting to link an event that happened a couple of days later to coincidence 😅

No way, bro, there's been a direct reaction to the demand for a raise.

In fact, the most critical information was how they responded precisely when the request for a raise was brought up. Was the approach directly negative or did they try to brush it off with vague statements? "We became like a family" could be a classic empty phrase used to cover other issues; is there a clear connection here that supports this feeling?

The same thing applies to your career: when someone puts you under emotional pressure, your decision doesn’t seem smart; it just ends up feeling rushed. Sleep on it for a night, then decide 😅
