My spouse embarrassed me while shopping at the market

We were grocery shopping, and I was trying to choose everything low-calorie. My spouse picked up potato chips and said, 'No one cares that you're on a diet, why are you torturing yourself?' Suddenly, I felt demoralized and was really upset by what they said. Not wanting to diet is my choice; I can't understand why I was taken so lightly. Do you think comments like this are normal? I can't be overreacting, can I?

I think it's really hurtful for your spouse to say something like that. I mean, if they're supposed to be supportive while you're on a diet, what harm would it do if they pretended not to want chips themselves at that moment? In the end, you're striving for your own health, and they should show a little understanding. Isn't marriage all about these little sacrifices that make it beautiful?

So did he grab those chips while on his diet? By the way, doesn't eating chips cause stomach perforation or something? That's what I've heard. If you're on a diet, you really shouldn't just suddenly eat stuff like that; I've heard it's really harmful 😳

@mahrem_saf No, I never ate it anyway, he did. But being belittled like this while I'm on a diet upset me. And this isn't the first time, he criticized me before too, saying 'you're wasting your time' 😅

The issue here isn't actually the chips. It's about respecting your boundaries and efforts. If you say you really want something, it's not normal for your partner to make comments like "you're wasting your time" instead of being supportive. Such dismissiveness is often seen in relationships, but it leads to wrong outcomes.

I think it's quite a common situation, but it shouldn't be exaggerated. There's a tendency among men to joke around in a teasing manner rather than offer supportive comments, and this habit can spill over into how they interact with their partners as well. Maybe they don't mean any harm, but it's obvious that it bothers you, and you need to communicate this clearly to your partner. How are people supposed to know what bothers you if you don't say anything?

@mahrem_saf the idea of a chip defect is such an outlandish piece of information, of course chips don't have that kind of harm. The issue isn't even about health, but rather respecting the decisions of the person asking. Supporting a diet is beneficial from a health perspective, but I think providing psychological support from your partner is more important.

@feminist I don't think it's a situation that should be blown out of proportion, after all, everyone's sense of humor is different. Maybe they said it jokingly, some people don't think that carefully when choosing their words. Of course, this continues if you don't come together and talk about it, that's another thing.

Now, sit down and calmly talk with your partner. In matters like this, everyone can have a different perspective, but you need to be clear with your partner by saying, 'This is for my health, please don't say belittling things.' If you have talked to a dietitian and made a nutrition plan, share that too; maybe then they will take it more seriously.
