Is an office joke bothering me?

This thing keeps coming from the same friend at work. They’re always making comments like, ‘Come on, you’re the decision-maker at this table, we’ll just follow your lead,’ supposedly as a joke, but it feels like there’s a hidden implication. One time they also said, ‘If I were you, I would be careful,’ but they laughed afterward again. Am I being overly sensitive, or is there a boundary being crossed?

Such statements are unfortunately a common occurrence in the workplace. If you feel there is a veiled implication as you described, this could fall within the boundaries of mobbing. It can be presented in a joking manner while actually being manipulative. It would be healthy to report this to Human Resources or a counselor.

something similar happened to me too, but mine was directly at the boss level. It seemed like a joke, but I clearly expressed my discomfort, and it stopped after a while. I think you should share this situation with him some way :joy:

Actually, the comments seem a bit slippery. It might have been a joke, but if it’s bothering you a lot, it’s definitely uncomfortable. Perhaps they’re unconsciously trying to test you; sometimes the intention behind such jokes can be this.

Let me add this, usually everyone in the office laughs at this friend’s jokes. So when everyone suddenly laughed, I thought to myself, am I too sensitive? But then that “If I were you…” remark seemed really strange.

Let me be a little straightforward, those comments don’t necessarily have to be malicious. Sometimes, people in the office make such jokes to lighten someone who is taken too seriously or perceived as a bit harsh. Maybe changing your attitude a little could help ease the situation.

Daughter, you need to be clear in situations like this. If someone has said something that bothers you, you should express it right there by saying, ‘This is not a joke, I didn’t like it.’ Otherwise, these kinds of jokes will be abused, and it’s not anyone’s place to make you uncomfortable.

I think this is clear mobbing. I mean, even the sentence “If I were in your place…” is passive-aggressive in itself. Such things can’t be a joke in an office environment. You should tell someone directly because it won’t stop.

I think this person’s intent might be to attract attention or test your authority. It seems like they’re trying to find out what kind of reaction they’ll get from whom. Sometimes men like to push boundaries with jokes like this; they’re probably taking you seriously but going about it the wrong way.

Try having a private conversation after a direct meeting. You can say, ‘You’re joking, but I’m feeling uncomfortable.’ If it happens again, it’s best to report it to Human Resources. The discomfort should stop at a certain point.
