They called it a special meeting, but I got scolded for real.

The boss has been talking about giving a promotion for a few days now; in fact, we even scheduled a special meeting after work. Honestly, I got a bit hopeful because things seemed to be going well lately. But during the meeting, he suddenly started yelling at me in front of everyone. He said things that belittled my performance, and I was shocked. Is this normal? Or should I realize that I shouldn’t stay here any longer?

How many people were at that meeting? Did they say anything to others or did it just turn entirely to you? :woman_shrugging:

I was also happy thinking I was getting a full promotion once, but I had eaten something similar in front of the team. Then I realized that the boss was trying to “show authority outside.” So we could swallow it. Nothing had changed

this is actually quite a common tactic. When you hide the error and sweep it under the rug, people think they aren’t taking responsibility. But of course, whether this is right or not is debatable.

@camkenari I can only say that he just focused on me. He didn’t talk about others, he concentrated more on me.

@pazardandondum it seemed to me like they’re not displaying any authority outside. Basically, they’ve humiliated you. Why should we normalize such a thing?

By the way, it’s interesting that they say ‘this isn’t the performance.’ It seems like they’re still giving you a chance, but it’s necessary to speak clearly and clarify things. What are they expecting? Have they set a specific goal before?

The real problem is that it has to be done in front of everyone. What is there that can’t be talked about one-on-one? At worst, you could just send an email, call someone after the meeting, or something like that…

I think you shouldn’t stay there too long :joy:
