My boss has been constantly coming to my desk to check every detail at the workplace I’ve been at for a while, sometimes even commenting while I’m writing emails. At first, I liked it because I thought they were being attentive, but after a while, it has started to feel like they are getting on my nerves. In fact, the other day, they changed a report I prepared without even asking me. Do you think this is out of jealousy or are they trying to convey something to me? I don’t know what to do; would it be right to remain silent?
‘You need to learn some things,’ he said, and my boss had said the same thing to me. Then I realized that he was changing everything because his own system works better. But I think he should have asked, otherwise a person’s motivation goes away.
The report thing is really frustrating. Once, they did a presentation and answered all the questions themselves. It really felt like I was just there for formality. Honestly, back then I went and said, ‘I can’t work like this,’ and it had a bit of an effect ![]()
This is a complete violation of boundaries. They are intruding into your production area and establishing authority, taking control of your work instead of owning it. You need to send a clear signal to prevent this from turning into labor theft.
How long has he/she been acting this way? If you liked it at first, you need to understand why he/she started to become so controlling afterward. Maybe he/she is dissatisfied with something or saw a mistake in the report? ![]()
Clients generally do this for two reasons: Either they really don’t want any mistakes and are detail-oriented, or they don’t feel completely secure in their own work. If they were hiding something from you, they wouldn’t talk this much face to face anyway ![]()
I think there’s something else going on there. The boss might be feeling pressure from above or could be focusing specifically on your work. Excessive control sometimes indicates that they are afraid of something; are you going to investigate the background?
Let me add that the changes in the report weren’t bad at all, but they’ve chosen a completely different path from my method. That’s why I wondered why I wasn’t asked. I’m afraid of the same thing happening over and over.
This kind of thing is actually quite common. Bosses can sometimes get too involved when they feel like they’re dealing with someone who doesn’t fully understand the job. But if this keeps happening, there’s no choice but to talk about it. Because as long as this continues, it will harm your ability to work.
I experienced the same thing. My boss would constantly add things to the Excel files I cleaned up, and then I realized that he was providing incomplete information. At that point, I said, ‘If we don’t discuss all the details from the start, I can’t handle it,’ and it got better. I think you should be clear as well.
