The patron touched my shoulder while presenting the report

This week I had a general report presentation at the office. I was already stressed, and suddenly my boss touched my shoulder. At first, it seemed like a joke, but then I thought, is the workplace suitable for such things? My friends say I’m being ‘too sensitive,’ but it doesn’t sit right with me. Do you think there’s a problem with this, or am I overreacting?

In my old workplace, the manager would sometimes touch my shoulder while shaking hands. It didn’t feel uncomfortable at the time, but later I thought about it and realized there is a fine line for someone in an authority position. If something like that happens again, I think you should clearly establish your boundaries. It’s not about being sensitive.

How long have you been at this job? Have you done something like this before?

@camkenari this has never happened before, I think it’s the first time they’ve made a move like this. but it still felt strange, to be honest.

@soncaykaldi it seems like you’re overreacting. Sometimes people make gestures, we shouldn’t always look for bad intentions. Saying there are limits to everything can also escalate things

The topic of physical contact in the workplace is a sensitive area. If it has made you uncomfortable, you should communicate this directly to the relevant person (your boss) rather than with your colleagues. If the situation escalates, you can share your concerns with human resources. To determine if it falls under the legal definition of bullying, you might consider consulting an expert.

It seems like you might have blown the issue out of proportion a bit. I mean, you’re saying there’s a difference between what you felt when you first touched it and your thoughts afterward; maybe you’ve overanalyzed it a bit. Give it another shot and see if it happens again.

@uykuarasi bad intentions can be more than just harassment; it can also be a show of power. They can stir up office chemistry subtly. I think we shouldn’t brush it off as just a ‘gesture.’

My boss once said “this report is great” and lightly patted me on the shoulder. I didn’t actually feel uncomfortable. But I think the relationship of trust between you two, the difference in positions, etc., affects that feeling. Still, if it happens again, I think you should express it.

I think your concern is normal. If there is something that bothers you, your sensitivity is valuable. In the next possible situation, you might show a slight withdrawal with body language. If it receives a response, you will notice.
