My mother made me return the skirt I bought

I bought a short skirt that I really liked from the market just yesterday. But today, when my mom noticed, she literally blew up. “Don’t come back home in a short skirt!” she said and insisted that I return it. I reluctantly gave it back, but honestly, it really upset me. If I wore the skirt, people would gossip in the neighborhood, but I felt like my freedom was taken away. What would you do? Would you conform to your family or continue with determination?

My mom used to meddle a lot with clothes too. In high school, she even argued with my dad over this. It seems like freedom, but these things blow up within the family. If you don’t have your own income, you sometimes have to compromise.

@cumagelmeden yes, I’m 21 years old, and I live with my family because I’m a student. I don’t have my own money yet :joy:

As far as I understand, in law, everyone is free to choose their own clothing after the age of 18, but in practice, such situations depend on family relationships. So, you have a legal right, but the dynamics in the home you live in tend to be more dominant. Focus on improving dialogue until you discuss it.

@soncaykaldi I think this is just an excuse. We can’t just dismiss it by saying it seems like freedom. If we get stuck on what the neighborhood will say, then everyone will walk around in their pajamas.

I think it’s the pressure from the neighborhood, not your mom, that’s frustrating. Moms panic because of this comment. But you should also look at your situation and ask yourself if you can handle it during this time :sweat_smile:

Honestly, even if your mother is right, her way of speaking is very sharp; that’s the real issue.

I would wear a skirt outside. No matter what anyone says, sitting at home means I don’t have a place to wear it anyway.

It wouldn’t be bad if you showed some maturity and understood your mother. After all, her only concern is to protect you. There’s a lot more in her life besides just that short skirt, so focus on those things :sweat_smile:
