My mom called my aunt without thinking, I panicked!

My mom panicked and called my aunt because I came home late. My aunt exaggerated the situation and made it into a story without asking me. Now there’s a lot of tension at home, and I don’t know how to defend myself. This situation has really put me in a tough spot; what do you think I should do?

Family matters really tire a person out. My mom once tried to call the neighbors to find me, but I had gone to school. I couldn’t get out of it, so I said patience. But the tension passed over time.

How old are you? Do these late responses happen often?

@kahvebitmeden I’m 24 years old, actually it’s not something that happens often. That day I was late to work, and my mom didn’t know, but I panicked for the first time like this.

Actually, your mother’s concern is understandable, but it’s really silly to create those stories without asking your sister-in-law. Did you tell her to shut up?

but this aunt has really exaggerated.

This situation happens a lot, especially in conservative families, where the lack of communication grows. Explain the situation calmly in order for them to understand why you’re late, and correct the rumors coming from your aunt with a brief conversation with your mother.

Be open and talk to your mom, tell her that your aunt is interfering too much. You might even want to mention that you don’t want her to call again; I think these kinds of tensions can repeat if they’re not addressed.

@benbisorayim that’s fine, but it would be enough to just resolve it directly with her mom without involving her aunt. Is there any point in dragging it out? After all, it’s something that has already happened once? :grimacing:

But if your aunt is exaggerating things, that’s a problem too. You might need to talk separately with your mom to find out how seriously you should take what your aunt is saying. Otherwise, the same story will keep going around.
