My mom filled my plate and made a comment about my diet

When I was there, my mom said at dinner, ‘Are you going to lose weight eating so little? You need to surprise your body,’ and she filled my plate with stuffed grape leaves in olive oil with her own hands. I felt bad, but I couldn’t say anything. They’re interfering with my diet, and I have to stay silent. My mom does this every time; what do you think I should do? Can I overcome this without hurting her feelings?

My mother’s approach reminded me of the old days. My mom always used to say, ‘You can’t have strength without eating.’ Now that I think about it, that generation was like that. She mentioned something about surprising the body, it’s funny, but I can’t help it, I think she was thinking of you.

So have you ever clearly said, ‘Mom, I can eat this much, I’m happy with my diet’? Or have you tried steering the conversation away from food?

@mesafe_emekci I’ve actually said it many times, but he doesn’t listen. He’s always saying things like, ‘It can’t be this few, I’ll teach you better recipes’ and so on.

@romantik_nostaljik it’s nice and all, but people are trying to live healthier now. The eating habits of the past can’t keep up with modern life. You can’t normalize all this interference just to keep your mom happy :joy:

I think you should sit down and talk to your mom. Explain that you’re getting support from a dietitian, working both practically and scientifically. Maybe she’ll be more open to understanding. You could even take her along once to show her in person? :slightly_smiling_face:

That saying “confusing the body” is legendary
I think stuff like this gets picked up from moms’ WhatsApp groups. Is stuffed grape leaves in olive oil the thing that surprises the body the most?

My daughter, your mother doesn’t have bad intentions, but you should also be clear and explain your eating habits. Sometimes mothers can be overwhelming while trying to protect. Explain the situation nicely; I’m sure she won’t be hurt.

@anne I wish it were always like that! My mom was like this too, I stayed silent for years. Then when I gained weight, they started piling it on me saying ‘I told you so.’ You either show your boundaries or you’ll be negatively affected, it’s that simple.
