Should my mom or I choose my wedding dress?

I’m looking for a dress for my wedding, but my mom insists that I wear something ‘classic’. I want something more modern and comfortable. But to be honest, I also don’t want to hurt her feelings. Do you think I should listen to my mom or should I do what I really want?

I think the wedding dress should be entirely your choice. But instead of completely sidelining your mother, try to find a design that combines a modern style with the details your mother loves. That way, both of you will be happy.

Look, you want something modern, and your mom says classic. Then find a boutique that caters to both styles and try things on together. It’ll be easier to talk about the dress that way.

I think about your mother, you’ve asked for his opinion thinking of him as a person, but then you don’t seem willing to listen. If he has a serious wish, think about his dream alongside your comfort, maybe he’s not exaggerating

These kinds of conflicts are quite normal. Generally, they get resolved at a point where mutual expectations become clear. Your mother wants a classic style, but did you ask why? Maybe she has an exaggerated concern for elegance while you prioritize comfort. It’s possible to choose a style that combines both of your views.

Thank you all so much. I’d like to add this: My mom actually cares a lot about my dress looking appropriate for the elders in the family. It seems like she’s afraid of being criticized about the wedding environment. Should I focus more on managing her stress, I wonder?

Be selfish: This is your day and your body! You will be photographed so that your memories won’t be forgotten. The moments you want to remember will be captured. Putting your own preference on the back burner is completely handing over your power to someone else. No one is more important than your feelings.

Marriage is not just between two people, but also a union of families. Mothers are sensitive because of this. Choose your style, but completely straying from what your mother says does not look good in the eyes of elders.

So I think you shouldn’t worry too much about your mom, after all, you’ll be wearing the dress. However, if you want to avoid arguing with her and just get through the day, find her a dress that looks ‘modern’ yet classic. It usually does the trick.
