Changed the contract, also taking the key with her

My spouse and I have been living in the same house for 2 years. They took the lease in their name saying, “It’s not about you, I just don’t want there to be any problems with the bank.” Now I’ve noticed that they always carry the house key with them when going to work. When I asked, they said, “It’s just a habit,” but I can’t shake off the feeling. Has something like this ever happened to you? Is this normal?

Back in the day, such things wouldn’t happen, you know? A person shares the house with their spouse, and the key is shared too. The part about it being ‘a habit’ seems a bit like an excuse to me. In the old days, there wasn’t this much distrust; if there was a problem, it was said openly. Maybe there’s a situation he can’t talk to you about, but still, he should be open.

That sounds really weird. It could be something innocent, but have you ever thought about this? Has there been any other little suspicious behavior before? Carrying the key around is pretty silly because you’re in the house too, after all.

@sadef actually has done confusing things like this a couple of times before. For example, he canceled the credit card after my purchases, but his explanation was ‘there was too much debt.’

@retro_yasemin don’t be so old-fashioned. If you don’t trust anyone, why are you living in the same house? Maybe the key issue is really related to habit; I don’t think it’s something to blow out of proportion.

I’m not a lawyer, but whoever’s name is on the lease will have a valid signature for legal arrangements concerning the house. Still, I don’t think this is related to the issue of transferring the key, because you live together in the house. To me, this seems more like a trust issue than anything related to the lease.

A friend of mine lives with his mother, but she always takes the key away. People sometimes become automated, maybe the guy isn’t even aware of it. If you keep looking at things with suspicion, you’ll blow them up in your head. But if it feels strange to you, I’d say speak openly about it, so you can feel at ease.

@aysu91 you’re definitely going to lose a lot out of good intentions. I think he’s quite a planned person. He has taken everything into account — the contract, the card excuse, the key… When you pile these up, it’s definitely not normal :grimacing:
