I brought up the salary issue, and my partner said this

I've been negotiating for a salary increase at work for a few days now. A new position opened up, and I knew I had to raise my salary; honestly, I negotiated well. But last night, while I was discussing this with my girlfriend, she said, 'You sure know how to ask for a lot of money.' It felt like she was belittling me, I don't know... I didn't like it, but I couldn't say I was upset either. What do you think she meant? Do you think she is belittling me?

It's not actually a bad phrase, but the tone changes these things. It's like you can't tell if it's serious or humorous.

but my ex was typically like this. I'd say I was going to achieve something, and she'd say, 'you are so ambitious.' The truth is, she wasn't really doing anything in her own life, and I think that bothered her 🤦‍♀️

How long have you been together? Is he generally supportive in his career? Maybe he just said something wrong at that moment.

@iki_dakika More than 2 years. Actually, I usually don't take things too personally, but this comment felt strange. His mother had also joked before saying, 'you ladies are superior' :( 😂

@aklimkaldi well, actually, what does your mother's comment have to do with it? I don't understand why people have made it a habit to poke fun at relationships.

Comments like this are usually an indirect manifestation of insecurity. Perhaps they are uncomfortable with changes in financial balances but can't express it directly. I would suggest trying to speak calmly.

If these things have started, the end will be bad.

If your mother's comment was made previously, could your partner's outburst have been influenced by that joke? If it has turned into a matter between you two, your salary issue might have been used as an excuse. Have these topics never been discussed before? 😂
