I didn't like my salary; my partner said I was exaggerating.

I've been very tired at the place where I've worked for three years, and I was excited when a new offer came. The interviews went well, but they offered a figure below my salary expectations. Considering my own standards, I don't want to accept it. However, my boyfriend said that such an opportunity is rare and that I shouldn't worry about the salary. Honestly, it felt a bit condescending to me. Now I'm confused; should I push for a better salary to stay or should I just say yes to this job?

I think you need to push for a higher salary. After all, you aren’t tying your life to this kid; your own decisions are more important. And then there are times when guys have that whole "I know better" attitude, you know? It's hard to understand. You've worked for three years, you clearly have experience, so why are you selling yourself short?

So, do you think it's normal for him to criticize you so much for not liking that suggestion? Has he ever failed to understand you on such a sensitive issue before?

@elifdeniz she's actually not doing it for the first time, she usually says to think more practically about work matters. But I have my standards, and she always says that I simplify things.

@sude34 I think you’re overreacting. Like your boyfriend said, it might be a really good opportunity. Also, if your standards are so high that it worries you this much, why not think about starting your own business?

Job interviews generally don’t end with the first offer. If your salary expectations are low, you can politely make a counteroffer. Even if the argument "this opportunity is rare" is sometimes true, it doesn't mean you should downsize your own goals. Listen to your boyfriend's thoughts, but the final decision should be yours.
