Last week, my boss pulled me aside and said he wanted to have a special conversation. At first, I thought we were going to talk about work, so I said okay. But at some point, he started asking strange questions about some of my photos on Instagram. I can’t figure out whether he’s just following me casually or if it means something else. Should I ignore it, or do I need to tell someone? How far should it go for this discomfort to be taken seriously?
It doesn’t matter if it’s a patron or someone else, they can’t interfere in your private life. Say you feel uncomfortable, and if necessary, go to human resources.
If you ask me, this might also be related to your behavior. Why are you using Instagram in a way that presents it in front of your boss? You need to be cautious in public as well. If your colleagues are watching, you should adjust your posts accordingly. Everyone thinks they can do whatever they want, but everyone, including your professional circle, is making judgments.
@gelenekci Actually, I only realized later that my boss follows me on Instagram. So I’m not sharing anything visible. But he has gone down to my really old photos, it’s like he’s stalking me.
@soran so the problem is this: why don’t you just remove it then? If you’re uncomfortable, you can close your profile, so it’s not in front of everyone. Or if you’re accepting this from the start, I’d say don’t make it such a big deal. I think protecting your personal space is a bit up to you.
I personally experienced a similar situation. A manager at my workplace started liking and commenting on my photos on Instagram. At first, I didn’t say much, thinking nothing would come of it. But later, he started asking for “private” conversations. I reported it directly to human resources. It was resolved quickly. These kinds of things can escalate seriously, so don’t ignore them.
