The boss leaned in at the last meeting and said, ‘Some people deserve to rise more.’ There was a tense silence in that moment, but I couldn’t tell if it was directed at me or someone else. Honestly, it feels like my performance at work has been a topic of discussion for a while, but why not just talk about it directly? Do you think I should take this seriously, or was he just throwing some shade?

I think this is related to you. Such comments shouldn’t be made out of the blue in the middle of a meeting. Either they’re trying to get your attention or subtly preparing you for something. If you’re saying your performance is being talked about, then they must definitely be referring to you.

You mentioned that your performance was being discussed; had something happened between you and the boss before? I mean, I’m asking if they implied things like this before :sweat_smile:

@ortacizgi this isn’t actually the first time. Last month, during a presentation, I had commented something like ‘we’re giving more opportunities to some, but we’re not getting a return.’

@soran this guy is really fixated on you, he wouldn’t do this to anyone else. But it’s odd that he tries to speak generally without referencing someone directly while talking. I think you should confront him directly. :grimacing:

In such situations, it can be risky to act without clarity. If you think they are referring to you, you could schedule a meeting and ask for direct feedback from them. Even just starting with something like ‘What do I need to improve?’ can clarify the situation.

@ikuzmani that’s fine, but not everyone speaks openly like you do. It’s a work environment, after all. When you muster the courage to ask, they start piling on even more. If I were you, I would just let things be.

it seemed a bit unnecessarily paranoid to me. after all, nobody would speak so openly like that. or why would the boss really talk that way? but still, I think we shouldn’t stress too much.

@hassashatice is it unnecessary? When the guy said ‘some people’, there was silence in the room. Clearly, he’s sending a message without naming names. Wouldn’t you find that strange if you were in that situation? These kinds of remarks always imply something :slightly_smiling_face:
