My friend was fired and I can't find out why

My friend was fired today, but the boss only wrote ‘performance’ on the termination notice as the reason. I think they were a very hardworking person. My friend can’t accept this; they were actually successful in their work. They aren’t telling anyone anything. What do you think we should do in this situation? Should I offer support, or should I just let this invisible rejection be?

I’ve experienced something similar; the boss didn’t provide any explanation. Later, I found out it was actually to bring in someone he knew. The performance excuse is always vague anyway.

Have you tried talking to the boss? Or could there really be another reason that was told to your friend?

We tried to talk before the coffee got cold, but they just said “company decision” and moved on. My friend isn’t explaining anything in detail, they’ve closed off a lot.

@soncaykaldi don’t think that everyone is doing it to get to know someone. Sometimes it could really just be a wrong performance evaluation.

They are legally required to clearly state the reasons for termination due to poor performance; check if there was a written performance evaluation form. If there wasn’t, you may file a lawsuit.

it’s quite strange to just say performance.

If your friend has been laid off, they have a limited time to apply for rights such as unemployment benefits. Make sure they don’t miss that deadline, even if they don’t ask for details, remind them. There should be a documented warning process for layoffs based on performance, the personnel should check the records.
