I keep breaking my diet because of my partner... is it their fault?

My girlfriend constantly wants to order takeout; she’s a total fast food junkie. I can’t say no to her insistence while I’ve started a diet, and then I end up getting mad at myself. But at the same time, we eat together and have fun… Do these things always happen in relationships, or does she need to be a bit more understanding? What would you do?

ā€˜You become so sweet when eating pizza…’ she literally said something similar to me. My partner is also a fast food lover, and it feels like she’s teasing me by ordering more just because I’m on a diet. The last thing she said was, ā€˜You look happier when you’re eating a hamburger.’ Honestly, I’m not happy; I’m gaining weight.

I think you should be a bit clearer too. There’s this perception that only the other person has to adapt in relationships. People make sacrifices for those they love, but only if it suits them, of course. What would happen if instead of insisting on pizza, they said, ā€˜Come on, let’s have salad’? You should take care of yourself a little, it seems :smiling_face_with_tear:

This kind of situation is actually a two-person issue. If it’s a diet accompanied by a partner, their support is really important. But remember, ultimately, being able to say ā€œnoā€ is in your control. If you’re struggling, you can seek nutrition coaching and ask them to be involved in the process as well. It will be both a sharing and a solution.

Let me add this too, I actually can’t resist the fast food part more than the sweets. When I see pizza, burgers, etc., I lose my mind. My boyfriend says, ā€˜We’ll treat ourselves once a week, I’ll support your diet,’ but then he’s the one who keeps starting it with, ā€˜Oh, there’s such a delicious pizza!’}

I think there’s something else going on here, I can’t say it clearly of course, but… It seems like their preventing you from dieting isn’t entirely about love. Maybe they’re afraid of your change, of you gaining control? There are guys like that, who have the mindset of ā€˜stay the same as me.’ I’d suggest you think about it, don’t let it stay too vague.
