My spouse secretly eats at night

My spouse has been saying that they’ve started a diet for the last few months. I’ve been trying to support them by not keeping snacks at home and all that. But last night, I noticed they got up and went to the kitchen and ate the pizza they had hidden behind the cabinet. This morning I brought it up, and they immediately got defensive. “I was hungry, what’s wrong with that?” they said. But it really feels like they tricked me. Is this normal? Would you care if you were in my shoes?

I think the problem isn’t the eating of the pizza, but the storing part. But on the other hand, you’ve done so much to support him, so it feels a bit unfair that he sneaks out to eat at night. I mean, he could just say, ‘I’m craving it’ so you can eat together. It seems like he’s disregarding your good intentions a bit.

Did you ever suspect that he said he was going to start a diet during this process? I mean, hiding pizza behind the wardrobe is quite an organized move. Didn’t you notice any other suspicious behaviors before?

@skeptik_hesapci Yes, I actually noticed that you’ve gone to the kitchen at night before, but I always thought you were just going to get some water. It turns out you might have been eating something then too, I don’t know.

@mesafe_emekci but I don’t think it needs to be blown out of proportion like this. After all, we are human, everyone has their weak points. Your spouse was also tested by hunger and couldn’t resist at that moment. Is this situation a problem that could ruin a marriage?

So, these secret eating habits can sometimes stem from the boredom of dieting, but they can also indicate emotional eating. Sit down calmly with your partner and ask why they are sneaking snacks at night. If they’re really bored, you can work together with a dietitian to create a more balanced meal plan. However, keeping these secrets at home can lead to bigger problems in the future, so it’s best not to cover them up.
