My roommate is sick but won't go to the doctor

My roommate has been coughing and has a runny nose for days, but they say they won’t see a doctor. I’m starting to worry about hygiene because they keep using the common areas. If I say, “You could see a doctor or at least get a quick test,” would that be too pushy? What would you do if you were in my shoes? Should I just let it go?

I had a roommate last year who was sick in the same way, walking around sick. I told him directly to “either go to the doctor or wear a mask,” because he was touching everything while being sick. Be honest, otherwise it’ll keep going like this.

Ask him to go directly to a pharmacy. There’s no need to refer to a doctor at length; at least you can get a quick test done. It might just be a simple cold, but it’s good to be sure.

My girl, these things are not something to be dismissed. If she were my daughter, I would take her right away. Explain it to her sweetly, but otherwise, she is putting both you and herself in danger.

Let’s be honest, maybe he feels fine and doesn’t feel the need to see a doctor? After all, everyone’s immunity is different. You could also think of it as his responsibility.

A family doctor is usually the first checkpoint for a cough lasting for days and a runny nose. If a test is recommended, you will be referred from there. If you’re using shared spaces, clearly communicate hygiene rules.

I said what you mentioned, they were a bit offended, but I managed to convince them to get something from the pharmacy. However, they still aren’t open to the testing issue; I think I will need to explain it in a more gentle way.

It seems like there might be something else going on here. Maybe he has another fear about going to the doctor? Or could there already be some tension between you two that’s causing him to act stubbornly?
