I’ve been tired of constantly seeing diet posts on Instagram lately. Everyone is losing weight, while I stay the same on the scale. These posts keep lowering my motivation. Is social media really effective in this regard? Or am I just exaggerating?
When I see ridiculous comments on those diet accounts on Instagram, I realize that most people feel uncomfortable like you do. I used to be exposed to it a lot as well, random suggestions and all. I deleted it and felt relieved.
I don’t think you’re just following diet accounts. If you’re seeing them this often, the algorithm has probably directed you that way. Have you ever tried blocking them?
@iki_dakika yes, that’s right, I’m not directly following these accounts but they show up in my feed because of the algorithm. Blocking them seems a bit of a hassle, to be honest.
@makarnaoncesi what’s the connection? Not everyone is disturbed by it. Maybe you’re the one lacking motivation; I don’t think you should always blame others.
Social media definitely affects our perception a lot. In such cases, you can observe for a while to see what content the algorithm exposes you to. Generally, it decreases if you don’t show interest.
The motivation problem, Instagram never helps anyway.
@soncaykaldi you talk about empathy a bit, but I don’t think the issue here is a lack of motivation. We should discuss the way algorithms manipulate people ![]()
Actually, the algorithm part is correct but I don’t understand this; it’s as if we’re acting like this issue has just emerged. It has always been there, has it only started to bother us now?
There’s nothing more natural than feeling uncomfortable about seeing diet posts. You inevitably start comparing; this person lost this much weight, that one dressed like this, and so on. But the interesting part is, are most of these accounts really sincere? I’ve scrutinized some of their posts so much that they take photos from an angle that makes it look like there’s no difference at all and say, ‘Look, I lost weight.’ So I think you shouldn’t worry too much about it.
