When I mentioned my salary expectations, they said 'you've exaggerated'

I was at a job interview, and my salary expectation was asked. I think I mentioned a figure that is appropriate for the market, but the HR manager frowned and said, 'You might be exaggerating a bit.' They continued the conversation in a clearly dismissive manner. I felt disheartened at that moment, but I didn’t say anything to look professional. Do you think this is normal behavior? Should I consider working at that company?

This isn't normal, no one has the right to question your salary in a condescending manner. It happened to me once too, and I was really upset. Then I ended up agreeing with another company anyway.

What were your expectations when you said this? Did it stay above the market average? Maybe it really doesn't align with the company's budget.

@kahvebitmeden not likely, I even said a number pretty close to the market, and it was actually a bit lower because I wanted to get the job. That's why it surprised me even more.

@biseydiycem I think you’re overreacting a bit. If the deputy principal's job is to respond to your salary expectations and they said it within professional boundaries, why are we taking it so personally?

There is a technical issue here; expressions like 'you exaggerated' are not professional. If the salary expectations are not met, they could have directly stated that their budgets are not that high. When you hear something similar, it can be helpful to ask 'why did you think that?'.

We don't know the exact figure the subject owner mentioned, maybe it's very far from the company. But the style is really a problem.

@yazipsildim you can't say 'you've exaggerated' in a professional setting; there's no justification for that. People come to job interviews with self-respect, and everyone has their limits.

it's the same in your career: when someone pressures you emotionally, your decision doesn't seem smart, it just looks rushed. Wait a night, then decide 😂
