My girlfriend says she's on a diet but secretly eats

My girlfriend is supposedly on a diet, but late at night there are bags of chips thrown into my cupboard. I noticed, but I didn’t confront her about it; she’s literally sneaking them and each time says, ‘I’m really sticking to it.’ Should I confront her, or just leave it be? I really don’t know what to say.

I think you should just say it directly, of course without hurting anyone. You could say something open but gentle like, ‘I saw the chips bag, if you’re on a diet, convince me too.’ So if there’s a lie in the middle, you should confront it without damaging the relationship too much, otherwise it becomes a trust issue.

You can casually brush this off with a bit of humor. Something like, ‘I’ve caught you, secret trash collector’ or so. If he’s not lying on purpose, you can keep him at ease so that it doesn’t leave a trace. Still, just be clear about the situation so it doesn’t escalate later :joy:

So, does he do this all the time? I mean, are there new bags of chips in the cupboard every week, or did you just happen to catch him once? Does it happen especially when he’s hungry, for example? Have you ever looked for a reason?

But I’ll say one thing, aren’t you being a bit unnecessarily detail-oriented too? After all, it’s his own body; he doesn’t have to announce it before eating. Maybe he’s afraid you’ll judge him? Why are you making the atmosphere so tense?

Diet psychology can sometimes create feelings of guilt. He may have secretly eaten because he feels he has not achieved his own goals. But if it has come down to an honesty issue, trust is important. You can have a conversation that is not emotional, but honest and solution-oriented.

Update: Yes guys, I found chocolate packs too, aside from chips. Sometimes they have been hidden under the table as well. To be honest, I get annoyed when they talk as if they’re following the diet one hundred percent. I’m not that controlling of a person actually

Do you live together? I didn’t understand, but if you’re engaged or married, he should have been more careful. A person doesn’t move forward with lies. So, is this a trait he can’t control, not just at the dinner table but in other matters too? Think about it :woman_shrugging:

Why do you care so much about this? Many people say they are on a diet but still eat pizza every now and then. Maybe they just don’t think about it too much, that’s why they continue like this.

The main issue here is not breaking the diet, but being dishonest. If they tell you “I’m being very strict,” they are aware that they are misleading you. You wouldn’t want that to reflect in other things besides food. That’s why it should be talked about openly
